Linux Installation

Aegis DVD Backup for Linux is available as a Snap package across all major distributions, or as a standalone Debian/Ubuntu (.deb) package.

Installation Options

Option 1: Snap Package

Install Aegis DVD Backup directly from the Snap Store:

Or run the following command in your terminal:

sudo snap install aegisdvdbackup

Snaps run in a sandbox, so the app needs your permission to talk to the optical drive and to see which discs are mounted. Run these once after installing:

sudo snap connect aegisdvdbackup:optical-drive
sudo snap connect aegisdvdbackup:removable-media
sudo snap connect aegisdvdbackup:hardware-observe
sudo snap connect aegisdvdbackup:mount-observe

The Snap updates itself automatically as new versions are published.

Option 2: Debian / Ubuntu (.deb)

1. Download the .deb package using the button above, then open your terminal.

2. Navigate to your Downloads folder:

cd ~/Downloads

3. Install the package using apt (recommended):

sudo apt install ./aegisdvdbackup_XXX_amd64.deb

Note: using sudo apt install will automatically pull in any required system dependencies.

4. Reading a disc directly from the drive requires membership of the cdrom group. Add yourself, then log out and back in:

sudo usermod -aG cdrom "$USER"

Aegis DVD Backup does not include any software for reading copy-protected discs. If a third-party library for this is installed on your system, the app will use it; see the documentation.

If a permission or library is missing, the app says so on the drive's card rather than failing partway through a backup.

Back up a disc

Insert a DVD, launch Aegis DVD Backup from your applications menu, select the drive and start the backup. See the documentation for backup modes, settings and what to do with damaged discs.
