Get the Beta of Aegis Backup. Free to download and use while it is in Beta — every feature, no charge and no license key.
Aegis Backup for Linux is available as a standalone Debian/Ubuntu (.deb) package, or as a Snap package across all major distributions. Both include the restic backup engine.
Option 1: Debian / Ubuntu (.deb) — recommended
1. Download the .deb package using the button above, then open your terminal.
2. Navigate to your Downloads folder:
3. Install the package using apt:
Note: using sudo apt install will automatically pull in any required system
dependencies. The package bundles its own Python environment and restic.
Option 2: Snap Package
The Beta is on the Snap Store's candidate channel. Install it from the Snap Store or in your terminal:
To back up to USB drives and detect them when they are plugged in, also run these once:
Snap limitation: the Snap's confinement can't read hidden files and folders in
your home folder, such as ~/.ssh or ~/.config, so it skips them. Use
the .deb to back those up as well.
Launch Aegis Backup from your applications menu. After you accept the terms, the first-run wizard sets everything up in four steps: pick the folders to protect (usually your home folder), accept the default classes, add a first USB drive or NAS share, and set a passphrase.
The passphrase is optional but recommended: it encrypts every backup, so a lost drive exposes nothing. Print the recovery sheet the wizard offers and keep it somewhere safe — if you lose both the passphrase and the sheet, nobody can open the backups, including us.
Until you install the background service, scheduled backups only run while the window is open. In the app choose Configure → Background service → Install. It runs as your own user, never as root.
Then add a second destination on a different device, and keep one copy away from home — a drive you rotate, or a friend's computer. Needs attention on the Overview tells you while either is missing. See the documentation for plans, other computers and restoring.
Settings, the catalog and logs are stored in ~/.aegisbackup/ (with the Snap:
~/snap/aegisbackup/current/.aegisbackup/) and are kept when the package is removed
or updated.
A macOS release follows the Linux Beta.
A Windows release, with Volume Shadow Copy, follows the Linux Beta.
No charge and no license key. After the Beta some features will require a one-time license — never a subscription. Restore is never limited. The software is proprietary and licensed, not sold.
