Aegis DVD Backup

Preserve your DVD collection before the discs give out. Aegis DVD Backup finds your optical drive, identifies the disc, and copies it to its own folder on your computer — with live progress, a clear account of anything it could not read, and nothing ever sent anywhere.

Core Features

Drive Discovery

Internal and USB optical drives are found automatically. Each one shows its vendor, model, disc label, filesystem, capacity and mount point, refreshed as you swap discs.

Smart Auto Mode

Before committing to a long copy, the app inspects the disc — readable, copy-protected or damaged — and picks the backup method that suits it. The reason for its choice is written to the activity log.

VIDEO_TS Folders

A file-by-file copy of the disc's video structure, ready to play in VLC, Kodi or Plex without the original disc.

ISO Disc Images

A sector-by-sector image read straight from the drive, for complete preservation or for burning a replacement disc later.

Live Progress

Percentage, bytes copied, transfer speed, elapsed time and time remaining, alongside an activity log that explains what the app is doing and why.

Cancel Any Time

Stop a backup at any point. Whatever has been copied so far stays on disk, and Cancel takes effect promptly even while the drive is struggling with a damaged region.

A Backup You Can Trust

A copy that looks complete but silently contains holes is worse than no copy at all — you only find out years later, when the original is gone. Aegis DVD Backup is built around never letting that happen.

Complete Means Complete

A backup is only reported as successful when every byte was read. If anything was missed, the run is reported as incomplete — never as a success.

A Report in Every Folder

Each backup folder gets a disc.json recording what was copied, from which drive, which backup method was used, and exactly which files or sectors could not be read.

Nothing Is Overwritten

Every disc goes into its own folder named after the disc's label. A second backup of the same title becomes MY MOVIE (2) rather than replacing the first.

Scratched and Damaged Discs

When a disc has damaged areas, the app falls back to a lower-level sector read that salvages everything still readable, retrying damaged regions within a sensible time limit.

It Won't Freeze on You

A drive can take 30 seconds to give up on a single bad sector. Reads are bounded by time as well as attempts, and progress keeps updating, so a pause on a damaged disc looks like exactly that.

Knows When to Stop

If a drive refuses most of a disc, finishing could take days. The app notices, stops early, keeps what it salvaged and tells you how long finishing would have taken — often the cue to try another drive.

Commercial Discs

Copy Protection Detection

Most commercial DVD-Video discs are scrambled with CSS. Aegis DVD Backup detects this by inspecting the disc's sectors directly, and tells you before a backup is written.

No Unplayable Copies

Most drives happily serve scrambled data, so a plain copy "succeeds" with files of exactly the right size that will not play. The app catches this and refuses to write out a complete-looking folder of unplayable video.

No Built-in Descrambling

Aegis DVD Backup contains no code for decrypting copy-protected discs. If a third-party library for this is already installed on your system, the app can make use of it; otherwise protected discs are reported and not copied.

Please use responsibly. Aegis DVD Backup is intended for personal archival backups of discs you own. It does not include, distribute or install any means of circumventing copy protection. Reading a CSS-protected disc is only possible through a third-party library, such as the open-source libdvdcss, that you have chosen to install yourself; Aegis neither provides nor endorses such libraries. The legal position on circumventing copy protection varies by country, and it is your responsibility to know the law where you live. See the documentation for details.

Why Aegis DVD Backup?

Your Discs Stay Yours

Everything happens between your drive and your disk. No uploads, no cloud, no account — your collection is nobody else's business.

No Telemetry

No analytics and no usage reporting. Settings and logs live in your own home directory where you can inspect or delete them.

Free During the Beta

No charge and no license key. Install it, back up your collection, and tell us how it went.

Get the Beta

Aegis DVD Backup is in Beta and free to use — there is no charge and no license fee. We would love feedback from anyone putting it to work on a real collection.

On Linux you can install it in one command:

sudo snap install aegisdvdbackup

Prefer a traditional package? A Debian/Ubuntu .deb is also available. The download page has both, plus the one-time setup that gives the app access to your drive.

Note on licensing: Aegis DVD Backup is free to download and use during the Beta, and no license purchase is available or required. The software is proprietary and licensed, not sold.
