Get the Beta of Aegis Hiker. Free to download and use while it is in Beta — every feature, no charge and no license key.
Aegis Hiker for Linux is available as a Snap package across all major distributions, or as a standalone Debian/Ubuntu (.deb) package.
Option 1: Snap Package
Install Aegis Hiker directly from the Snap Store:
Or run the following command in your terminal:
The Snap is currently published on the Store's candidate channel, so the
--candidate flag is needed.
To read photos or export files on USB drives, also run this once:
The Snap updates itself automatically as new versions are published.
Option 2: Debian / Ubuntu (.deb)
1. Download the .deb package using the button above, then open your terminal.
2. Navigate to your Downloads folder:
3. Install the package using apt (recommended):
Note: using sudo apt install will automatically pull in any required system
dependencies. The package bundles its own Python environment.
The trail brainstormer and the AI trail guide use a language model running on your own computer through Ollama. Install Ollama (see our Ollama setup guide), then pull the default model:
The default model runs on an 8 GB laptop without a GPU, taking several seconds per reply. On a
slower machine choose qwen2.5:3b instead.
Ollama is optional: maps, route composing, timing, the phone companion, photo matching and the hike replay all work without it, and route suggestions fall back to built-in rules.
Launch Aegis Hiker from your applications menu, pick a region in Explore Regions, and either brainstorm a hike or start composing a route on the map. See the documentation for the phone companion, logging a hike with your photos, and making a hike website.
To pair your phone, it must be on the same Wi-Fi as your computer. Cache the region on the phone before you leave home.
To match photos, install Aegis Photo Voyager and scan your photo library with it first.
Your hikes are stored in ~/.aegishiker/ (with the Snap:
~/snap/aegishiker/current/.aegishiker/) and are kept when the package is
removed or updated.
